The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly-Owen

I was thinking that most of us do not bring our best motors to meets as we go to run and enjoy a boat and motor, not to show off our best.  For this reason maybe some of you out there would be interested in some of the motors you never see, and hopefully you will join in and send pictures of your treasures also.  With me the best stays at home where it is safe.  Also I thought that some might be interested in some not-so-good things I recently bought and what I paid for them.  Many things I can not remember what, or for other reasons will not put what I paid.  Please understand that all of the things I have on this page are NOT FOR SALE,  so please don't call for a  "deal " .    Owen

L-R   I got this 1962 15 hp Gale Buccaneer about three weeks ago for $60 with some extra thrown in for the rolling stand and delivering it from San Antonio. The owner thought it was a 25-35 hp and I was very glad it was a 15 hp. I had met the owner at Canyon Lake Meet years ago.

Next is a boat, trailer, and 25 hp 1957 Sea King I bought for $ 150 this week plus another $ 75 in gas to make a 250 mile round trip to pick it up.  A guy I know called me on this one, he is not connected with our club.  I have not had time to go over it, but the motor turns over and ignition looks good thru the opening in the flywheel. The rig has set up 20 years, so surprised the motor turns over.  You would not believe the trash I washed out of the motor.  The boat make is unknown to me as no title, but the lady I bought it from is the widow of her husband who did own the boat.  It looks much better in the picture that up close.

L -R.   1954 Evinrude 25 hp electric starting I got about a month ago.   Next a small Muncie I bought at a local Tractor & Machine show for $ 100 a month ago.  I have not tried to start it but the guy said it ran good.  Side cowlings came with it. Last to the far right is a motor I got from John Powers who bought it on one of his trips to the Tomahawk Nationals.  Best I can remember around $ 350 - $400  ?

L-R  Waterwitch & Rowboat  Motors.  The Waterwitch came via John Slator from Tomahawk and the Evinrude from Bill Fisher and was restored by Johnnie Reid.  On the far right a M-30 I got from Steve Guidry years ago.  Can not remember the price,  but Steve was fair in his pricing and I have lots of good quality motors I bought from him.

Some of my Mercury Collection. To the left a Comet and behind it a Rocket. The Comet completed my collection of Green Tank Mercury's and was won by John Powers at Louis' Meet as donated by George.  Later John Slator bought some things from John Powers and I bought the little Comet.  To the right some of my Green Tank Collection, in back the red Mercury is a M-55 and in back and to the right a Dirty 30.  The KF 9 was rated at 25 hp, but more like 40 hp.  My mother took me to the Mercury dealer when they first came out and owning one was but a dream.  This one is not a running motor and I just enjoy having it.  When I got it the spark plug cover was missing and John Slator bought a reproduction cover at Tomahawk and then Frank Simon fitted it to the motor and did the paint job. It does have the correct tiller with the squeeze throttle handle.

To the left is a boat I bought from John Powers 10 years ago, it is a 14' Elgin made by Lone Star and the motor is a 40 hp Sea King I paid $ 150 for long ago in Sea Brook.  It took me ten years to finally get the boat into the water and with the 40 hp Sea King, it makes a good rig.  I bought the boat and two 35 hp Evinrudes at the same time and seems the price for the two 35s and boat was somewhere around $ 450 ? One of the motors was a parts motor and no one had ever changed the gear oil in the other one and the LU was full of water and gears totally rusted.  I still have both 35 Evinrudes.  Picture to the right is an Oliver I bought off E-Bay and what the owner had not broken, UPS finished off.  I think I have about  $100 in it and bought it due to being in a tractor club.  The other is a 7 1/2 Evinrude that has the knob on the top to put it into neutral, got it from Steve Guidry.  I ran one like it when I was a kid so I enjoy having it for memories.

L-R  Firestone 16 hp, looks like made by Scott, I can not remember how much I paid or where this one came from ?  Middle is a 25 hp 1974 Johnson I pd. $ 50 for about two months ago, the owner called the president of the tractor club I am in and wanted to sell an outboard.  Electric start, turns over and I have not worked on it.    Powermatic 12 to the far right I bought at a Canyon Lake meet.  When the guy ( not in our club ) said he wanted a $100 I bought it.  I had to put in a new ignition system, water pump impeller, carb. & fuel pump rebuild kit but now runs good and looks very good for an original.

L-R  18 hp Evinrude and in the middle a 25 hp Wizard, both came from the late Don Korbs, not sure what I paid for either ? To the far right is a Mark 25 mounted on a Wizard 10 LU and cowling.  I think this came from Peter Schultz as put together by Frank Simon ?

L to R   More of my Mercury Collection - Front of KF-9 with KH-7 Cruiser next to it.  I think I got the KH-7 from Steve Guidry & Frank Simon restored it, not sure ?  Middle, good running 7 1/2 Mercury that runs good from Steve Guidry, next to it a KG 7 without cowling and has the tiller throttle accessory. Far Right a Silent Six I got from John Powers many years ago, seems I paid $ 250 ?

Evinrude Speeditwin 22 hp, Middle is a Johnson Super Sea Horse, Paid $ 250-275, long story on this one that went from me to John Powers and then back to me.  Far right Speeditfour 33 hp Evinrude, can not remember what I pd. for it ?

L to R  Champion & an Evinrude fold up motor,  Middle, Older style Johnson 16 hp, I think I pd. $ 150 for it ? R- Nice 5 hp Johnson and a small Martin with fuel pump conversion.
