On July 8, 2008 our club lost a good friend, member, and
ex-president who worked hard for many years for our club and
fellow members. Wilbur was our president in 2002 and 2003
and I held the same jobs then as I do now so I worked with
Wilbur for the club. Wilbur was always active in the club
and he and I traded motors and parts over the years. He had
a good sense of humor and I never heard him complain about
members or the club, more than I can say for myself. The
picture below was taken by Louis Rothermel at a Chapter Dry
Meet at George Jacobs place in Sherman Texas on March 6th or
7th, 1999. I have the 33 hp Evinrude that Wilbur is standing
with in the picture. I did not buy it directly from him, but
it went through a few hands before I bought it. Like so many
other motors I have from deceased members, I intend to keep
the motors and the memories of those that once owned them.
For a number of years Wilbur would sponsor a dry meet in
Grapevine on the parking lot of a large Hardware store.
Wilbur covered all bases: entertainment for the ladies,
place to eat, get together in the evening, and information
about what to do in Grapevine. Wilbur was also an ex-racer
and his hydro “ Damn Yankee “ with a racing PO was a
familiar site at our meets. He will be missed and never
forgotten. Owen
Members,
David Coffey Jr. brought to my
attention that if you go to you-tube as below and put
in outboards in the search place, many videos will be found
on all types of outboards including antiques, restoring,
running etc.
